If I’m completely honest, I am not the best gardener. I’m a bit impatient and don’t have a great eye for detail. We have tried to grow many, many things over the years in our garden, but they mostly get eaten by slugs. One year out of sheer desperation we put copper tape around our planters, eggs shells in the planters and even a tub of beer inside the egg shell wall, and STILL the slugs got through. I think it was the smell of the beer. In the end we decided the cost of the preventative beer was more than the money we’d save growing tomatoes, chillies and blackberries so we gave up.
However, I would like a prettier garden so last week the kids and I spent a tough few hours digging up weeds and thorns and actually planted some plants. I have big plans for a fairy garden, but we’ll see how that progresses. In the meantime we’ve been practising in the tuff spot.
While we may have given up goring edible items in the actual garden we haven’t given up indoors and have recently started growing herbs, as I get so cross at how they cost in the supermarket to buy fresh and would love to just be able to pluck what we need from the windowsill.
Spalding bulb sent us a little herb starter pack to get us going. Hannah had a great time adding water to the dehydrated soil and planting thyme and chives. Fingers crossed they grow.
I’ve also got big plans for a mud kitchen this Summer, and yes I know time is running out fast on that one, but we have the sink so are off to a good start! Do you grow anything in your garden?
Do you have any anti slug tips for us?
