Are you looking for some Father’s Day inspiration? This great guest post has lots of fab ideas.
The first Father’s Day is always an exciting event for new parents, and there are no right or wrong ways to enjoy it. Here are six suggestions for making a dad delighted this year.
A meal
In their first year, children won’t encounter the full experience of dining. They might not even be old enough to sit in a high chair, they might not have teeth, and their diet may be limited to say the least. However, as long as you’ve got some food suitable for your little one then you can enjoy the meal as you would any other, either as a couple or with friends and family. If grandparents are invited you’ll probably not even have to spend much time looking after the baby, as they’ll be only too keen to shoulder the responsibility.
Home treats
Mum can return the favours that dad gave out on Mother’s Day (he did, didn’t he?) by allowing you to rest in bed, cooking meals, changing little one throughout the day, and allowing you to watch the sport on TV such as France vs Switzerland in Euro 2016, or the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. As your child grows older this treat will become a rarity, so grab it with both hands.
Fitness
This writer spent his first father’s day running 10k for charity. The event, in an airfield near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, is held on Father’s Day every year and there’s a real family atmosphere. My 10-month old daughter was oblivious to the run but enjoyed playing on the sidelines with her mum on bouncy castles and swings, and in a few years might want to participate in the smaller runs herself. This is just one example from across the country, and they tend to finish by midday, meaning that there’s plenty of recovery and ale time in the afternoon.
Beach
A trip that’s dependent on the weather, and to a lesser extent geography, but one that guarantees everyone will always remember the first Father’s Day. Whether it’s a stroll along the waterfront for the teenies, or the first sandcastle for a child of a few months, the beach in a traditional British summer can’t be beaten. Netmums highlights Cornwall, Dorset and even Mablethorpe and West Scotland as perfect beaches for the family. Throw in some fish and chips and ice cream for the ideal day.
Photo shoot
Book early if you want to capture your first father’s day, as other new parents might have the same idea. A shoot that will produce great pictures later suitable for wall prints via a company such as PhotoBox could take place in your garden, front room, studio, or nearby park. Even if you don’t do the actual pictures on the day and the shoot is instead received as a gift voucher, it will give dad something to look forward to in the coming months.
The Zoo
Again, a trip to the zoo is likely to be pretty busy with parents and animal lovers of all kinds, but that doesn’t need to be a drawback. The plus side is that your little one will love the unusual creatures on display, while mums and dads can enjoy strolling leisurely around the complex without a care in the world.
