I’m feeling quite reflective today, a couple of my good friends are turning 40, my husband has just turned 40, my eldest child is almost NINE!! How did that happen? I can’t quite believe I have been a parent for that long. It seems like last week that I would spend my early maternity leave afternoons massively pregnant reading in the soon to be nursery, loving the peace, quiet and warm sunlight on my back. I remember my brother in law sending me a link to Facebook telling me to join, it was months later that I actually joined and I never thought it would play such a big part in my life. Facebook is now a huge part of my day, it’s a central part of my working life, a place where a group of ladies I am proud to call my friends, colleagues and mentors keep me sane amongst the craziness of my job and a way to stay in touch with friends I don’t manage to see much day to day.
I remember starting University and e-mail being this new great way to communicate with friends, we only had internet access in the library and had to log on via a green screen, it seems so old fashioned now. It was only the first Christmas there that I even had my own computer and non of the rooms in my halls had internet access. We didn’t have internet access to journals for research, but instead had to trawl through them in the library, it was a completely different world. Mobile phones were massive, black and white and great if they sent a text message. I forget that those days are now 15 years ago…and actually that’s quite a long time!
Sun Life have created this cool map detailing changes over the years. Simply choose a decade and a region to read more about what has been going on in the UK since the 1960s. Did you know for example the first London marathon took place in 1981?
