I’ve had a cleaner in the past, and it was incredibly useful. However, it took me almost as long to tidy up for them to clean as it took them to clean, and when we needed to save money, I had to stop. I am now thinking, though, that it would be good to have one again. This guest post explains why people hire a cleaner!
Six million people in the UK pay someone to do their housework, so they don’t have to, which is up by 20% compared with the start of the century. However, of these people, two thirds will keep it a secret from family and friends, according to a new survey.
So, with companies such as Molly Maid in high demand, why are people embarrassed to own up to the fact they have a cleaner? Well, according to the research they don’t want to be seen as ‘snobs’.
If you are considering hiring a cleaner yourself, here are a few pros and cons:
Pro: Less stress
Cleaning can cause a lot of stress – from finding time to do it, as well as the time it takes to do it. But, the mess if you don’t clean can cause just as much stress and as a result you can feel demotivated and unhappy in your own home. A cleaner, however, can take this stress away, as you do not have to worry about the house being a mess or when you are going to get around to cleaning it.
Con: Costs you money
However, you will have to pay a cleaner to come into your home and do the jobs you don’t want to. This could mean you have less money to spend on holidays and experiences—the things that can create long-lasting memories.
Pro: Saves you time
A cleaner will save you time. Whether you are raising a family and/or trying to climb the rungs of your career ladder, time becomes far more important than money. The hours you would have spent scrubbing the toilet and vacuuming the carpets can be spent having quality time with your family.
Con: A cleaner may do things differently to how you would
A cleaner may do things differently from how you would like them done, meaning you often find yourself redoing things after they have left. Likewise, if you are house proud, you may find yourself cleaning before they arrive so they don’t see your house in a messy and dirty state.
Pro: You don’t have to get your hands dirty
Does anyone really want to spend their Saturday morning with their hand down a toilet? Hiring a cleaner means you don’t ever have to do these dirty jobs again.
Pro: Saves you time
A cleaner will save you time, whether you are raising a family and/or trying to climb the rungs of your career ladder this time becomes far more important than money. The hours you would have spent scrubbing the toilet and hovering the carpets, can be spent having quality time with your family, engaging in hobbies like playing sudoku, and more.
Con: The issue of trust
You need to feel happy letting someone you don’t know very well have a key and access to your house when you are not there.
Pro: Your home is always clean!
No matter how much mess the kids make or how little time you have in the day, your home will always be clean!
There are many pros and cons to weigh up when it comes to deciding whether to hire a cleaner or not. But, ultimately it all comes down to your individual situation and if hiring a cleaner takes some of the stress out of your life and frees you up to spend more time doing the things that make you happy then why be ashamed to do it?
