Kids rooms can be some of the hardest rooms in a house to keep clean. In my house there’s usually paper, pens and snack wrappers behind beds, under the bed, on shelves and even in the drawers. Toys on shelves gather dust faster than I can remove it and let’s not forget the dirty socks, towels and everything else that gets left on the floor. Today, I’m sharing some top tips for keeping kids rooms clean without spending hours tidying and cleaning every week.
Time saving cleaning tips
Be organised
Take a bin bag or bin into the room you’re about to clean so any rubbish can go straight in the bin. I try to take an empty cardboard box too to put anything recyclable in.
Gather cloths and any cleaning equipment you need before starting the job. A duster is usually essential!
Wipe the walls
Wipe clean paint is great for high traffic rooms. Try to wipe hand prints and other marks from the walls when you see them. Finding out how to remove sticker residue has been invaluable for keeping my walls clean and sticker free too!
Wash and clean toys
Soft toys can be washed on a hot wash in a washing machine to keep them clean and smelling good. Bath toys and other plastic toys can often be washed in the dishwasher ( check first ).
Try a clutter box
I have one container that I use to put all the little items that get left around the house in, then every now and then we play a game where we see who can find the correct home for the items the fastest. It’s a great fast way to tidy when you’re short on time.
Another idea is to have a box or basket for each person in the house, then they can put away their own items at the end of each day.
Get a laundry hamper
Either place a family laundry hamper within easy reach of all the kids rooms or give each child their own laundry bag for keeping dirty clothes in. Hopefully this will mean less floor clutter and fewer lost socks!
Vacuum frequently
Vacuuming or mopping ( if you have hard flors ) stops little bits of dirt and food ending up mushed in the carpet.
I also try to avoid too many messy activities in bedrooms after we had a very messy slime incident which ruined a carpet!
Keep the carpets fresh
A bit of baking soda sprinkled over a rug or carpet and left for 15 minutes before mopping is an easy chemical free way to keep them fresh and odor free. Baking soda absorbs dirt and smells!
Look for useful storage
Spend time looking for good storage and furniture for kids rooms that will keep mess out of sight and allow a bit of organisation. I have found that the older my kids are the more storage they need for school books, homework and stationary.
Have a big annual declutter
It’s easier to keep a house tidy when there’s less clutter so have a big clear out once a year and then it should be easy to stay on top of the mess.
My final tip is to get the kids involved and try to encourage them to stay on top of their own mess!
