If you’d asked me 3 months ago, if I thought I’d buy Pokemon cards for my 4 year old to take to school, I’d have said ‘Absolutely no way!’. He got one pack of 10 cards for Christmas and I nearly put those back when I saw they were £3.49. When did a little pack of cards get soooo expensive, weren’t they about 20p when we were young?
Anyway, Z came home from school yesterday and told me in a shy little voice that he was sad because no one wanted to swap cards with him. The mother guilt kicked in and today I went into ‘Game’, gritted my teeth and paid £8 for a big box of cards. All the time thinking what else I could have bought with that amount of money. According to the young man behind the counter Pokemon is some kind of game??? Clearly I need to educate myself, but for now my little boy will go to school happy because he has a big wad of cards, not just a tiny little pile.
I’m also trying to forget that when I said to him school probably doesn’t like children taking in Pokemon cards he said.
‘Its ok Mummy, we are clever and hide from the teachers’.
I’m hoping Pokemon is a passing phase….but if anyone has any cards they don’t want…..

Since when did kids get so clever?! Reminds me of the troll phase when I was about 7. Everyone collected these ugly plastic trolls with crazy hair and would display them on their desks. One girl had one the size of an 8 month old baby! All these things I have to look forward to as F grows up… *sigh*

graon… trading cards… groans again! we have had all sorts, but not pokemon for some reason! dotor who and moshi monster seem to be the flavour of the day round here, and i have done exsactly like you said i would not waste money on them.. then brought one pack.. then felt bad when i get the sad eyes from the children to only then go out and buy a whole host more… then to find them laying around everywhere exept where they should be… not to mention the fact we once had a super rare shinnier than shiny weeping angel doctor who card, and my son was soo happy to find it in his pack.. he took it to school proudly only to come home without it :ox

I’ve seen the moshi ones, but no idea what they are 🙂
Actually Mummy...
Oh yes they are good at that aren’t they? GG runs a potion club at school – I said I didn’t think her teacher would be too happy about it and she retorted ‘But we only get them out at break when the teachers are having lunch. The lunchtime play leaders don’t care what we do!’ Oh, that’s alright then….

I read this and then asked my teen to sum up Pokemon cards in a sentence ‘A waste of your money and life yet hopelessly addictive’. He loved them and can still tell me all their names and their abilities…he plays it at a ‘semi professional level’. He’s been doing it since he was 6 and credits his ability to retain enough info to be passing everything at A* to this training (nothing to do with me then!) Thanks for linking lovely lady!
