With that in mind, here are some simple yet effective ways to make your family home safer!
1. Install some kind of alarm system in your home. One of the easiest ways to ensure your home remains a safe haven is to install some kind of alarm system, such as camera detector smart alarm systems for home. Not only does the presence of cameras act as a physical deterrent to crime (as it means there’s video evidence), but it will also provide you with much greater peace of mind moving forward.
2. Encourage kids to be safe online. Your children’s online habits while browsing the family computer or their phone should also be factored into your safety plans. After all, a recent government report found that “over 80% of children (aged 12-15) have had potentially harmful experiences online.” You can make the internet a safer space for your children by ensuring that they are introduced to computers at an appropriate age, teaching them about online dangers, and ensuring that any non-PG content is filtered out.
3. Enhance safety through lighting. Installing motion-sensor lights on the exterior of your property and porch is another great deterrent against crime. However, this form of home improvement has many other benefits. For example, it ensures that all entryways are well-lit, which makes your home more accessible to guests.
4. Get rid of all that clutter. When worrying about safety in the home, your mind likely turns to the actions you can take to prevent crimes such as theft or burglary. However, the presence of clutter could also be a threat to your overall safety in the home. For example, piles of toys can quickly become a tripping hazard, especially among smaller children who are just learning to walk. Similarly, cluttered spaces within your home become a place where dust, pollen and other allergens can thrive, weakening your immune system and leaving you more vulnerable to sickness. As such, now is the perfect time to ditch that clutter for good!
5. Be sure to lock all of your windows and doors. While this piece of advice may seem a little obvious, a recent study found that nearly half of Brits do not lock their doors and windows when they are at home – despite the fact that many burglaries take place when occupants are present. Getting into the habit of consistently locking windows and doors will help increase home safety, and it’s also great behaviour to model for your children.
From decluttering your home to installing smart security cameras, there are plenty of steps that you can take to maintain a happy, safe home. Taking action now to follow these steps will lessen your anxieties, ensuring that you are able to sleep peacefully!
