As our babies grow up and out of the stylistic nurseries we lovingly prepared for them, we quickly realise that their bedrooms are about so much more than how they look.
Organising your child’s space is about creating an environment that nurtures their growth and sparks their imagination while also helping to keep things organised. With these simple tips, you can transform a cluttered room into a serene, organised sanctuary for your little one to flourish. So, let’s roll up our sleeves and dive in, turning your child’s room into a space that will let their personality shine.
Use storage solutions that work for the space
When it comes to organisation, storage is key. But not just any storage – we’re talking about creative, functional solutions that provide plenty of space to stow away toys, books, and clothes.
The first spot to use is under the bed, where you will find a hidden gem of a space, perfect for storing items that aren’t used daily. Consider a bed frame with built-in drawers, perfect for storing away large items. You can even use roll-out containers that can easily slide in and out.
There are also plenty of furniture options that come with built-in storage. Toy chests are a game changer in the younger years, where all those soft toys can be piled out of sight (it’s amazing how many they collect!). For older kids, a desk with drawers is the ideal spot to pop belongings that don’t have a home while leaving the top clear for that all-important homework.
Create bedroom ‘zones’
Creating functional ‘zones’ within a kids’ bedroom not only helps to keep the room tidy but also supports your child’s various activities, from playtime to study. Here’s how you can create some bedroom zones:
- Designate different areas: with distinct spaces allocated for different activities, your child can move easily between each one. Having a well-defined play area is perfect for fun and creativity, while a reading nook promotes concentration and downtime. Think about your child’s interests and start planning.
- Arrange furniture for optimal flow: the placement of furniture helps create a smooth flow between these different zones. The goal is to maximise floor space and make it easy for your child to move from one area to another. Focus on the largest pieces of furniture first, ensuring they’re in the right spot. Next, arrange the smaller pieces, like the desk and toy chest, in a way that creates clear pathways between each zone.
Rotate toys and books
It’s amazing how quickly kids chop and change their minds. Toy rotation is the perfect remedy for their fickle nature. If you haven’t heard of it, toy rotation involves periodically swapping out a set of toys for another, keeping only a portion of your child’s toys accessible at any given time. It not only instantly cures that boredom but also helps to keep their room nice and tidy.
You can also use this system for books and even clothes. Store out-of-season clothes in vacuum-sealed bags or under-bed storage boxes to free up wardrobe space. When the season changes, simply swap out the clothes. As for books, if you’ve used them recently for storytime at bed, simply swap them out for a new one!
Keeping it organised
All these tips are well and good, but once organised, it can be tricky to keep it that way. One key thing to try is getting your child involved. This not only teaches them responsibility but also gives them a sense of ownership over their space.
Start by explaining why it’s important to keep their room tidy. Then, show them how to use the storage solutions you’ve set up. Make sure they can easily reach the storage bins, shelves, and drawers and that they know where everything goes. With everyone having their own place, it’s easy for them to pop it back once they’re done. You could even make a game out of it!
It also helps to establish daily or weekly routines for tidying up. This could include putting toys away after playtime, putting dirty clothes in the laundry basket, and tidying up the desk after study time. Make the routines simple and manageable, and be consistent in enforcing them.
Happy organising!
Organising a kids’ bedroom may seem like a daunting task, but with the right strategies, it can be a rewarding and even fun experience. Remember, the goal is not perfection but creating a space that works for your child. Involve your child in the process, be flexible, and most importantly, have fun with it. With a bit of planning and effort, you can create a room that not only looks good but also feels good to be in.
